The Co. Waterford Beekeepers’ Association is dedicated to preserving the native Irish honey bee, also known as the “black bee.”

The association’s demonstration apiary offers members and the public the opportunity to learn about practical beekeeping and queen rearing, all in an easy and relaxed atmosphere, with practical hands-on work with the bees.

The association is involved in various breeding programs, including the supply of bees and queens, advising the public, and advocating against importing bees from abroad, which poses a risk of disease and pests being introduced.

The demonstration apiary was opened in August 2018 by Micheál Moynihan, whose father Michael Moynihan was one of the founding members of the Co. Waterford Beekeepers’ Association. Micheál spoke about the association’s heritage in the Déise area, which spans more than sixty years, and the importance of preserving the native Irish honey bee.
